    Coin: 1839 Quarter Farthing

    Monarch: Queen Victoria

    Composition: Copper

    Issue: Colonial issue for Ceylon

Obverse: Young Head of Queen Victoria

Reverse: Crown above QUARTER FARTHING and date

Condition: Fine to Good Very Fine overall, with clear legends and a strong reverse

Notes: Honest circulation wear, attractive colour and good collector appeal

1839 Quarter Farthing – A Distinctive Early Victorian Colonial Coin

This 1839 quarter farthing offers strong historical appeal in a very small format. Although tiny in size, it carries real presence. Moreover, it represents one of the most unusual copper denominations of Queen Victoria’s early reign.

The obverse shows the young portrait of Victoria with clear surrounding legends, while the reverse presents the denomination and date in a bold, readable layout. As a result, this coin displays well in hand and also sits comfortably in a serious Victorian or colonial collection.

Condition of This 1839 Quarter Farthing

This 1839 quarter farthing sits between Fine and Good Very Fine overall. The reverse is particularly pleasing, because the crown, lettering and date remain sharp and easy to read. Meanwhile, the obverse shows honest wear to the higher points, yet the portrait still retains a clear outline and attractive early Victorian character.

Importantly, the legends remain readable on both sides. In addition, the coin keeps an appealing natural copper tone, which suits the piece well. There is expected age-related wear from circulation, and there are minor surface marks consistent with a genuinely used nineteenth-century coin. However, there are no distracting issues that spoil its display value.

Why the 1839 Quarter Farthing Matters

The 1839 quarter farthing stands out because it was struck for use in Ceylon rather than for general circulation in Britain. Therefore, it holds appeal not only for Victoria collectors, but also for buyers interested in colonial and world-related British issues.

Furthermore, the denomination itself feels unusual to modern collectors. Because the quarter farthing is so small, it often attracts attention immediately. That, in turn, makes it a strong conversation piece in a cabinet or tray of early copper coins.

For broader background on historic British coinage, the Royal Mint Museum provides useful reference material.

    Collector Appeal

Collectors often seek these Copper quarter farthings because it combines an early Victoria portrait with a scarce-feeling colonial denomination. Although many Victorian pennies and halfpennies appear regularly, this much smaller issue offers something more distinctive. Consequently, it fits especially well in specialist copper, colonial or type collections.

    Summary

This 1839 quarter farthing is a pleasing and collectable example with clear legends, a strong reverse and honest early Victorian character. Because it balances history, scarcity appeal and visual charm, it makes a very worthwhile addition to a well-chosen coin cabinet.

A small coin, yet a very interesting one, and a solid example of this popular colonial Victoria issue.
