    Item: Loetz Style Glass Shade

Type: Bohemian iridescent art glass lamp shade, open at both ends

    Date: Early 20th Century

Material: Iridescent art glass with cased white interior

    Height: Approx. 17cm

    Width: Approx. 13cm

    Top Aperture: Approx. 5cm diameter

Loetz Style Glass Shade with Phänomen Influence

This Loetz Style Glass Shade immediately stands out because it combines colour, movement and surface detail in one striking early twentieth-century piece. Moreover, the flowing pulled trails across the pink ground create a strong visual structure that collectors recognise straight away.

This beautifully decorative glass shade shows strong Phänomen-style trailing, a key feature collectors search for when identifying Bohemian iridescent glass.

Because this shade displays clear vertical trailing with iridescent layering, it reflects the well-known Loetz Phänomen style. As a result, it carries far more character than standard iridescent glass shades.

    Colour, Iridescence and Surface Detail

The surface shows a rich pink ground that shifts through gold, green and violet tones as the light moves. In addition, the lower section carries darker oil-spot iridescence, which adds depth and contrast to the overall appearance.

Meanwhile, the pulled trails run organically from the neck down toward the base. Because of this, the shade feels alive with movement rather than flat or uniform.

Furthermore, the white cased interior softens the light when used on a lamp. Therefore, the shade offers both decorative presence and practical function.

    • Similar iridescent glass shades were later produced by Royal Brierley; however, the pulled trailing, oil-spot iridescence, and cased construction seen here point more convincingly toward earlier Bohemian production in the Loetz manner.

    Form and Function

This Loetz Style Glass Shade features an open form at both ends, which makes it suitable for gallery-mounted or chimney-style fittings. Consequently, it works well with both oil lamps and early electric conversions.

The gently frilled base adds further decorative appeal. At the same time, the balanced proportions ensure the shade sits comfortably within a variety of interior settings.

✔ Strong indicators of earlier Bohemian production

    • Pulled vertical trailing design
    • Layered iridescence with depth
    • Oil-spot / mottled base
    • Cased white interior
    • Organic transition between colours

Bohemian Art Glass and the Loetz Phänomen Style

Bohemian glassmakers produced some of the most distinctive iridescent glass of the early twentieth century. Among them, Loetz Witwe became especially known for organic flowing decoration and complex surface effects.

This example clearly reflects that influence. The vertical pulled decoration and iridescent surface closely follow Loetz Phänomen glass techniques, which collectors continue to seek today.

For further reading on historic glassmaking techniques, the Corning Museum of Glass provides excellent background information.

While similar pieces are sometimes described as Tiffany style, this example shows clear Bohemian characteristics including pulled trailing, cased interior and oil-spot iridescence typical of early 20th century production.

    Condition and Display

This Loetz Style Glass Shade remains in good antique condition overall. The iridescent finish still shows well, while the structure remains sound and display-ready.

However, as expected with most antique glass, it is always possible, that there are light signs of age and use. Therefore, please examine all photographs carefully before purchase.

A Striking Decorative and Collectable Piece

Collectors often look for pieces that combine craftsmanship, colour and historical influence. This Loetz Style Glass Shade delivers on all three.

Because it shows strong Phänomen-style trailing, rich iridescence and a well-balanced form, it works equally well as a functional lamp shade or as a standalone display piece.

Overall, this is a highly decorative example of early twentieth-century Bohemian art glass that will appeal to both collectors and interior enthusiasts. Because there is no signature, or makers marks, attributing such items is always difficult. Please study images carefully and make up your own mind regarding age, maker, and value, before ordering.
