(Ale Tankard or Liquid Measuring Mug)
A Rare Antique Copper Tankard
This Antique Copper Tankard is a fine example of traditional French craftsmanship from the 18th or 19th century. Made from hand-hammered copper, it would have been used as a measuring mug for ale, wine, or other liquids. With its flared body, sturdy handle, and decorative wavy rim, the tankard combines function with a rustic charm that collectors admire.
18th/19th Century French Copper Measure
Known as a French copper measure (ale tankard or liquid measuring mug), this vessel played an important role in taverns, markets, and kitchens. Measuring approximately 13cm in height, it would have held close to a pint. The robust handle made it easy to grip, while the wide base gave it stability during use.
The piece shows clear signs of age, including a rich patina and areas of verdigris. These features are not flaws but hallmarks of authenticity, reflecting centuries of use and adding to its antique appeal.
Condition and Display
This tankard is in good antique condition with a beautiful natural patina. For full transparency, one section of metal strapping is missing from the side of the handle where it meets the body (see images). However, the handle remains firm and well-secured.
As with all genuine antique copper, surface wear, light dents, and green patination should be expected. These elements enhance its originality and historic character.
Today, this Antique Copper Tankard makes an attractive display piece, whether shown in a kitchen, pub-themed interior, or as part of a collection of early metalware. It offers both historic value and decorative impact.
